- 1. I plan to build an integrated CD player: which parts and components are required?
-
As shown on the above schematic, the main parts and components to design your CD player are: a CD module, a User Interface, an Audio Board (optional), a PSU, and a chassis.

-
The CD module is usually the master piece of a player: the module is made of a mechanism and a servo board. For instance, you can use the CD-Pro2LF together with a mechanical kit suitable for top loading applications.
-
The user interface is also a key aspect in a CD player, as it communicates with the CD module, takes care of the user commands and drives the display accordingly. You can consequently control your audio application thanks to a remote control handset or the front panel keyboard (Play, Next, Stop, etc…). We provide a plug-and-play Display Board in our CD-Pro2LF/Display Board package that includes all required components soldered on-board: display, display driver, filament driver, user microcontroller (with a user software ready-to-use!) and an Infra Red receiver.
-
The audio section includes a Digital to Analog Converter and audio buffering. It has a very strong impact on the sound performances of your player. The CD-Pro2LF is supplied with a standard Digital to Analog Converter (DAC) but you can also choose another external DAC to get your own audio “signature”.
-
Finally, the PSU converts the mains input voltage into stabilized DC voltages required for the module, the user interface and the audio board. A dedicated PSU is provided within the CD-Pro2LF/Display Board package and CD-Pro2LF/DSA Evaluation Board package to start your development as soon as possible.
-
Last but not least, the chassis is the physical interface which allows audiophiles to appreciate the cosmetic appearance of their high-end audio player in addition of the sound performance.
-
- 2. I want to design my CD player but I do not have a strong experience in software / hardware development: which product / package do you recommend?
-
We strongly recommend the CD-Pro2LF/Display Board package:
Indeed, this package offers the main components of a CD player including the famous CD-Pro2LF, a complete user interface board, a remote control handset, and a PSU.
Regarding the user interface board, all components are already soldered: display, display driver, filament driver, user microcontroller (which includes the user firmware) and the Infra-Red receiver. You can control your player thanks to the detachable keyboard or the remote control handset. The PSU convert the mains input voltage into stabilized DC voltages which are required for the module and the Display Board.
This Plug-and-Play kit will let you focus on the other parts of your player such as the chassis, etc…If you want to get further information about this package, please visit the CD-Pro2LF/Display Board package.
- 3. Do I need a remote control handset in addition to the CD-Pro2LF/Display Board package? Which RC protocol is used?
-
A remote control handset is provided in this package. It is based on the RC6 protocol. If you want to use another remote control handset with this package, you have to make sure it is RC6 compatible. If you want to use another remote control handset based on another RC protocol, it means that you will have to design your own user firmware to handle the protocol you have selected.
- 4. I want to build a CD-Pro2LF based CD player with a display of my own: is there any specific tool available for that purpose?
-
The CD-Pro2LF/DSA Evaluation Board package will definitely meet your expectations if you are looking for a tool to develop your own user interface with the display of your choice.
Indeed, the DSA Evaluation Board provided in this package enables you to connect the CD-Pro2LF to your PC thanks to the USB port. Then, the GF DSA Interface Manager software allows you to send any DSA command to the module and simulate all key functions of a player thanks to integrated macro-commands. The returned information is shown in a VFD-like display window, thanks to a friendly PC interface. The main user commands (play, pause, next, ...) are available from a virtual keyboard so that you can quickly realize the high-quality of the CD-Pro2LF. The GF DSA Interface Manager also includes Spy and Maintenance modes which will make easier the design and technical support of your products.
- 5. Is the PSU included in your packages compatible with my country’s mains voltage?
-
The PSU provided in our packages should work in your country, as they are universal PSU. However, before you plug the PSU to the mains, you must carefully check the technical specifications of the Power Supply Unit (included in the CD-ROM) to make sure you can use it in your country.
Besides, make sure that all cables are properly connected before you plug the power cable into the outlet. Cables or wires must NOT be unplugged while the power is on. There is a potential risk of fire, electric shock or injury to persons if the PSU is not used as instructed.
- 6. I am familiar with the CD-Pro2LF and I just need to purchase this CD module to develop my top-loading CD player.
-
Very simple: Select CD-Pro2LF and you will get this famous audio-dedicated module with its mechanical kit (clamper, suspension, retention rings). You will be able to enjoy the outstanding performances of this Red-Book CD module. This option requires however a good know how-how of hardware and software design to build your own boards and develop the appropriate firmware which controls the CD-Pro2LF as well as complete user interface.
- 7. I own a Jukebox from one of the following brands: Wurlitzer, Rockola, Wurlitzer, NSM, Regatta, Rowe, etc …. and I need to change the CD-Pro2LF module
-
The CD-Pro2LF for Jukebox is the product you need. The module is provided with a center hub that may be used by some jukebox brands. Please note that the ornemental cover plate of the module is removable to fit into your jukebox. Be careful during this maintenance operation, as Audiocdpro will not be responsible for any damages caused to the module or the jukebox. For detailed information on maintenance of your jukebox, please contact the jukebox manufacturer.
- 8. I am working for an audio repair shop and I need to change the CD-Pro2LF module in a CD player.
-
If you want to replace a CD-Pro2LF module, just click on the CD-Pro2LF link: this version is electrically and mechanically backward compatible with previous versions of this highly successful module. Be careful: some audio manufacturers make additional modifications to the CD-Pro2LF: please contact them for detailed information. Note that the Audiocdpro guarantee is not applicable anymore in case you make hardware modifications to the module.
- 9. Can I modify the hardware/software module in order to improve its performances?
-
Please note that Audiocdpro does not advise any hardware/software modifications regarding the CD-Pro2LF. The CD-Pro2LF has already excellent and outstanding audio performances, which have made this module very successful in the High-End market. It does not require any modifications. Besides, in case any hardware modification of the module would be required for your design, please note that the Audiocdpro warranty will not apply anymore.
- 10. Can I handle a CD module like a resistor or does it have to be handled like a radioactive item?
-
Handling products like CD modules should be done with the greatest care (although it is not radioactive):
Contamination of the optical lens of the module will alter the performances. Avoid fingerprints/dust on the lens; handle the products in a clean environment.
Customers in charge of taking the products out of shipping bags or mounting them in the cabinet should carry a wrist strap in order to ground the human body. Electro Static Discharges (ESD) can damage the products, especially if they occur around the Optical Pick Up unit (OPU) of the module. Please refer to the specifications of the CD-ROM to avoid any potential damages.
- 11. Where can I get all the technical specification about the products?
-
For all our products/packages, a CD-ROM is provided including all the technical specifications to build your own CD application.
- 12. What is the DSA communication protocol used with the CD-Pro2LF?
-
Developed 16 years ago, the DSA protocol is a communication process dedicated to audio CD applications. It allows you to control the CD module and get subcodes information back (time, track,…). This protocol is a reliable and easy-to-implement audio protocol and has become an international standard thanks to its high-level commands. The great flexibility of the DSA High Level Interface makes easier the development of your user interface compared to a module with a low-level interface. Further information about the DSA communication protocol is included into the CD-Rom. The best way to get familiar with the DSA interface is to get the CD-Pro2LF/DSA Evaluation Board package.
- 13. I have heard about the CDM12 ind: is it similar to the CD-Pro2LF?
-
The CD-Pro module has been supplied for more than 16 years. The latest version of the CD-Pro is known as CD-Pro2LF (VAU1254/31 LF): it is the successor of the CDM12ind launched in 1994, the CD-Pro (VAU1252), the CD-Pro2 (VAU1254), and CD-Pro2M modules (VAU1254/31). The CD-Pro2LF is electrically and mechanically backward compatible with previous versions of this highly successful module (Small hardware or software changes might however be required for specific applications).
- 14. Is an external Digital to Analog Converter required to build my CD-Pro2LF based CD player?
-
No, you can use the on-board DAC (AK4384).
- 15. How can I improve the performance of my CD player based on Audiocdpro components?
-
One option would be to improve the high-end Digital to Analogue Converter section: for instance, you can easily replace the original AK4384 DAC as you can send the I2S audio signals from the CD-Pro2LF to another external DAC (master clock can be retrieved if necessary too).
Another improvement would be to add an analog power supply dedicated to the audio section of your section application, while the original switch mode PSU would remain for the digital section.
- 16. I do not want to build a CD player based on DVD parts or computer drives? What are the options?
-
The CD-Pro2LF and our pakages based on this module will without any doubt fullfill your expectations: the CD-Pro2LF is indeed a real red-book module dedicated to CD audio applications. It does not make any attempts to play other formats like DVD or SACD: it only plays CD, CD-R, CD-RW, and it is exacly where this module excels. The performances of this module regarding playability, disc acceptance and reliability are definitely outstanding. Again, Audiocdpro provides professionnal audio components that have been used in state-of-the-art audio equipements.
- 17. Where can I connect the cover plate of my top loading player so that the user interface board I got in your package can detect it has been opened/closed?
-
You can solder it to the 2 holes (U9) dedicated for that purpose on the user board.
- 18. I would prefer to have the “Play” key of the user interface board at a different location on my front panel?
-
Please note that the keyboard is detachable and you can consequently move it away from the user board and choose the best location for it on your front panel.
The User Firmware provides a great flexibility for keyboard configuration too: It is indeed possible to allocate any command/function of your choice to any physical key on the front panel: it means that you can easily re-map your keypad according to the final design of your audio player.
You can also remove the small keyboard and solder wires according to the selected schematics, so that you can place the keys wherever you want on your front panel.
- 19. Can I increase/decrease the luminosity of the VFD display?
-
A dimming option, providing 6 levels of brightness, has been implemented in our software (cf package) in order to increase/decrease the luminosity of the display at your convenience. You can use the remote control handset or the keyboard to choose your level of brightness.
- 20. Is it possible to change the colour of the VFD Display I got in the CD-Pro2LF/Display Board package?
-
You can indeed change the colour of the display thanks to an additional filter applied on top of the VFD. These filters can be supplied by manufacturers specialized in display solutions.
- 21. Are all Audiocdpro products compliant with the RoHS directive?
-
Yes, all our products are RoHS compliant, which means that they comply with the RoHS directive that took effect on July 1st, 2006. RoHS stands for "Restriction of Hazardous Substances" and refers to the 2002/95/EC directive adopted in February 2003 by the European Union. RoHS is often referred to as the "lead-free" directive.
Complying with the RoHS directive actually means that the concentrations of the following substances are below 0.1% in the entire range of products:
- - Pb (lead)
- - Hg (mercury)
- - Cd (Cadmium)
- - Cr VI (chromium 6)
- - PBB
- - PBDE (except for Cadmium: concentration is below 0.01%)
The limits do not apply to the weight of the finished product, or even to a component, but to any single substance which could be separated mechanically (for instance, the sheath of a cable).
All our products are RoHS compliant but you must verify that all other parts in your transports comply with the RoHS directive too.
RoHS applies to the products made or imported into the European Community. However, it's leading a worldwide shift to environmental regulation, and environmental legislation is currently been written in U.S. states, Canadian provinces, in China, ... As a result, you might be very soon affected by the RoHS compliance, even if you do not sell into European countries.
We consequently advise you to check that your end products are fully RoHS compliant. Since the CD-Pro2LF module and its related components (display kit, power supply unit, ..) already comply with the RoHS directive, it should be easier to proceed with the rest of your application.
- 22. I want to ship CD players abroad and I need a certification of your components for some countries.
-
In case you want to export CD players based on Audiocdpro components, you sometimes need a certification for your products (FDA reports in USA, etc...). There is actually no certification for the CD-Pro2LF and our audio parts (Display Board, DSA Evaluation Board). Indeed, certifications apply to complete products, i.e. players. The module and our other parts are considered as components and do not have any certification or accession numbers. They are just ”prepared” for safety requirements. You can see the safety requirements in the specifications of these products included in the CD-ROM.
However, you might need to join the technical specifications of the laser unit and the laser mechanism of the CD-Pro2LF to some reports. These documents (particularly the specifications of the laser unit) should help you for the customs and reports, and to get a certification for your players.
